The Pacific Grove Fire Department was founded in 1885 and consisted of nine members. Today the Department is a combination fire department with a Fire Chief, an Assistant Fire Chief, a part-time Fire Prevention Officer, an Administrative Secretary, 15 paid Firefighters, 25 part-time (volunteer) Firefighters, 25 part-time (volunteer) Ocean Rescue/Hyperbaric Chamber Technicians and a part time Fire Clerk. The Department offers many public education resources to the citizens of Pacific Grove including a mobile fire and life safety trailer, CERT training, station tours, a comprehensive life & fire safety inspection program, provides free smoke detectors / batteries, and instruction in CPR to name a few. The Department has 3 type-1 fire engines, a truck company, ocean rescue apparatus and utilizes some of the latest equipment; semi-automatic defibrillators, computer generated mapping and reporting system, thermal imaging cameras and large diameter hose. The Department protects a geographical area of 2.86 square miles with a full-time population of 16,500 residents and responds to an average of 1650 calls a year. All members of the Pacific Grove Fire Department are dedicated to protect life, property and the environment from the adverse effects of fire, medical emergencies, accidents, release of hazardous materials, natural disasters and exposure to hazardous conditions. In essence, to maintain and enhance a community environment that is conducive to the overall quality of life in the City of Pacific Grove. |
